Thematic clusters

Many of the member institutions cover a broad range of topics, theoretical outlooks and methodological takes on the scientific study of language and communication. Nevertheless, there are two major thematic clusters, with many overlaps and interactions, which can be identified: Multilingualism (most prominently at the centres in Bozen, Fribourg and Oslo) and the “VICC”-cluster language variation (including language typology), language in interaction, language contact and language change. All centres also share a strong empirical orientation, working with large amounts of natural discourse or experimental data, in many cases informed by a functional, pragmatic-interactional and/or usage-based approach. In many of the centres there is also a strong interest in a close collaboration between linguistics and the cognitive and neurosciences.
